Global renewables capacity: how much can each country make?

One of the celebrated agreements at COP28 was the pledge to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.

That means tripling the world’s installed renewable energy generation capacity to at least 11,000 GW by 2030.

This is a key feature of the IEA’s Roadmap to Net Zero by 2050. The IEA says it is ‘the single most important lever’ to reduce CO2 emissions. ‘This has been a key and recurring element in our data and modelling since May 2021.’

124 countries signed, including the EU.

China didn’t sign the pledge. Yet, it is the world’s renewable energy superpower. In 2023, it added 301 GW alone - 59% of the world’s total. If it continues that pace, China will exceed the COP28 target.
